The Splash Pattern

~The Rarest  Pattern of All~
~The Splashed White~
Splash White Race Horse
 GAMBLING MAN

Splashed white is the rarest form of Pinto & my personal favourite pattern, imagine dipping a horse in sea of Paint, so that the top of its body stays dry while the rest is splashed in paint, this is the Splashed white. Some even come complete with the wavy pattern up the side.
World Champion Reiner - Splash White Stallion "GUNNER"

The Splashed white Pattern starts from the bottom of the horse & extends up wards, the legs, end of tail & head are affected first then upwards. First impression of the splashed white is of a sabino but the edges of a straight Splashed white are more Square Cut with out the ticking & flecking often seen on a Sabino. The face is most often bald with blue eyes blindness does not affect the Splashed white in all those tested to date. Splashed whites Trademark is their unique white dipped tail, the bottom half is white. splashed white has been seen in its most minimal form with as little white as white pasterns & a white dipped mouth & without the associated white dipped tail.
Minimal Splash White
To make it very confusing Splashed White is often found in conjunction with the sabino pattern, the prolific Sire of Splashed white horses (the Millard line) in Australia is Bald Eagle & he himself was a Splashed white Sabino with sabino ticking being so extensive it almost made his Splashed white pattern unreconizable.
BALD EAGLE  pictured below

Bald Eagle produced Splashed white off-spring many being sabino combinations. Dunsplashin Studs resident splash white stallion Anasazi Windtalker is a Grandson of Bald Eagle.

All Splashed whites tested to date in australia are hearing impaired  ( so is my husband so don't let that put you off  ) they do hear on some levels and certain tones, in alot of cases the owners do not even know they are hard of hearing as they are not flighty and are very alert & vocal, there ears are always moving, they communicate with their foals with very low tones & at feed times ours call out very loud almost a piercing noise . They are very good with body language & vibrations they feel you rather then hear you.
They are very sensitive to touch & body language, (movement of the body) this replaces voice when training them. To me as a person who has trained & ridden them, they are smart & very docile, Being so sensitive to touch they learn to respond to the slightest pressure and are a true thrill to ride.

To produce a Splashed white, one parent must be one (even if it is in minimal form)
Our stallion Anasazi Windtalker is tested overo neg he is a splashed white and sabino, no overo present and can be bred to the loudest overo mares with no possibility of a lethal foal.
ANASAZI WINDTALKER
Overo and Splash should not be confused very different genes are required to produce both patterns they are not as some think the same pattern, a overo not carrying the splash gene will not produce a splash foal and a splash not carrying the overo gene will not produce a overo.
It becomes more difficult when the two patterns are bred together, they no longer should be called a splashed white but rather a Splashed Overo, so that we are then aware the overo gene is now present in the animal and know its outcomes when breeding
HEY WHAT THE
Splash mare & Foal
Splashed white is often confused as there is a ridiculous tendency to call any Horse with a stocking, a blue eye or that is hard of hearing a Splashed white, there are a number of deaf pintos or deaf extensively white horses & they should not be confused, just because a horse is hearing impaired does not automaticly make it a splash
Splash compared to any other paint/pinto pattern is a very rare gene, while we see many overos, tobiano, sabinos  there are still in comparision low numbers of splashes, mostly as the splash gene is only in a couple of lines of paint horses
Splash white is best bred to Solid but can be bred to other patterns & can co –exist with all other Pinto patterns althought I have yet to get it to mix with the tobiano  pattern the foal is either one or the other not both to date.
